NSS/NYC LECTURE SERIES:
WHEN: Saturday, February 8, 2003, 4:00-6:00pm (3:30-4:00pm free refreshments)
Guest Speaker: Paal Brekke, European Space Agency "The Sun Through the Eyes of SOHO; New insight into our star, and its impact on the Earth's environment"
Since its launch on 2 December 1995, the Solar and
Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) has provided an unparalleled breadth
and depth of information about the Sun, from its interior, through the
hot and dynamic atmosphere, and out to the solar wind. SOHO has
continued to revolutionize our understanding of the Sun with its 24
hour per day observations of our daylight star. The main
objectives of the SOHO mission was to study the structure and dynamics
of the solar interior, the heating of the solar corona, and the
acceleration of the solar wind. Five years later, science teams
from around the world have made great strides toward answering these
"big three" questions. At the same time, SOHO's easily
accessible, spectacular data and basic science results have captured
the imagination of the space science community and the general public
alike. This presentation will summarize some of the scientific
highlights and illustrate how SOHO acts like a a watchdog for solar
storms. Furthermore, accurate monitoring the energy output from
the Sun is important for understanding any natural valiability of the
Earth's climate. NSS/NYC LECTURE SERIES: Guest Speaker: Dr. Edward Belbruno, Princeton University, IOD "The Future of NASA"
WHEN: Saturday, March 8, 2003, 4:00-6:00pm (3:30-4:00pm free refreshments) Abstract:
With the tragic loss of Columbia, NASA and the US must reevaluate the
future plans for the human exploration of space. This is discussed. NSS/NYC LECTURE SERIES:
WHEN: Saturday, April 12, 2003, 4:00-6:00pm (3:30-4:00pm free refreshments)
Guest Speaker: Paul Contursi, NY Chapter of the Mars Society "THE MARS MISSIONS OF 2003" Five missions are slated to arrive at Mars this year (1 Japanese, 1 ESA, 1 UK and 2 US). I could briefly summarize each and describe what we hope to learn and how these missions will set the stage for future exploration. YURI'S NIGHT / NYC The following two events, on Saturday, June 14, will take the place of our normal monthly meeting. Both events are FREE and open to the public. Please bring your picture ID with you. JUNE 14 DETAILS: Organizational meeting of the NYC Chapter of NSS WHEN: Saturday, June 14, 1:00PM (Please take note of the earlier-than-normal time) WHERE: New York University main building, 32 Waverly Place, follow signs to room. It is near the East side of Washington Square park. Please bring a picture ID to show the guard and tell them you are there for the "space meeting". See the bottom of this page for a map! WHAT: Just because it's an "organizational meeting" doesn't mean it won't be fun! There will be free refreshments (and coffee if we're lucky!) We will be accepting last minute nominations for the officer positions and allow people a chance to say a few words about why they are running if they wish. Then we will hold officer elections. If you have been thinking of getting more involved, now is the time! We will also give people a chance to voice their ideas and opinions for the chapter in general. We may even partake in some birthday cake to celebrate our president's old age! Mars Lecture by John Pazmino (author of SpaceWalk) TALK TITLE: The 2003 Perihelic Opposition of Mars WHEN: Saturday, June 14, 3:45PM WHERE: 1010 Park Avenue, near 85th Street. Let the door tender know youre going to the astronomy or Observing Group meeting, which is normally in the office just up the steps on the first floor. (Please take note of the different location) WHAT: John Pazmino will give a presentation about Mars, as briefing for the close approach he makes to Earth in August of this year. The main topics are naked eye and binocular viewing of Mars, with handouts and computer simulation. There will be suggestions for viewing Mars via telescope, for NSSers with such instruments. NSS/NYC LECTURE SERIES:
WHEN: Saturday, July 12, 2003, 4:00-6:00pm (3:30-4:00pm free refreshments)
WHAT: Organizational meeting of the NYC Chapter of NSS This organizational meeting will be lead by Candace Pankanin, the new president of NSS/NYC. NSS/NYC LECTURE SERIES: We have two guest speakers this month. Henry Vanderbilt, president of the Space Access Society will be sharing his wisdeom about Cheap Access To Space, and Elaine Walker (former NSS/NYC President) will talk about her experience in the High Canadian Arctic with the NASA Haughton Mars Project and show lots of colorful pictures.
WHEN: Saturday, August 23, 2003, 4:00-6:00pm (3:30-4:00pm free refreshments)
4:00 PM
4:10 PM "NASA Haughton Mars Project: 2003 Field Season Show-n-Tell"
Elaine Walker has just returned from Devon Island in the Canadian high Arctic, where a group of
dedicated scientists do important research each year that is needed in order for humans to live
and work on Mars. Elaine will be speaking about her time spent on Devon Island, what she observed
of the other participants' research, and about the making of her music video for her new song
called "Mars". Her arctic trip and music video are part of the "Mars Media Project"
which is sponsored by the Space Frontier Foundation as part of the NASA Haughton-Mars Project's
Education and Public Outreach Program.
5:00 PM "Cheap Access to Space"
Talk description: Henry Vanderbilt will be talking about exiting new developments in cheap access
to space. |
